Candidates should move beyond basic grammatical diction; focus on connotations, audience effects, and a wide range of formal and stylistic features.

Strong candidates command 100+ techniques across all 6 IB assessment categories.

During class, I always stress how different IBDP is from IGCSE. The level of analytical sophistication cannot be compared, not to mention the structural rigour IB requires of English A candidates.

So...forget what teachers have taught you in your IGCSE years.

For instance, your analysis is only mediocre if you only analyze grammatical diction like the author's use of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. There are many more meaningful formal and stylistic features you can analyze in a DP text. You don't even need to explain the denotation of the author's word choice. Instead, you should dive right into the connotations of selected quotes, and address their effects on intended audiences.

To be a competent IBDP English A student, you should be familiar with more than 100 techniques that encompass all 6 categories in IB's mark schemes.
