"We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories."The Handmaid's Tale by

A common IBDP set text, this dystopian novel is a feminist twist on George Orwell's 1984. Atwood envisions the horrors of a world ruled by a patriarchal, totalitarian Christian theocracy, where women are forcibly assigned to produce children.
Though published in 1985, Atwood is still actively writing and being a voice of critique over the Trump Administration -- for its sexist and racist values, for its political persecutions, and for its favoritism over oligarchy. Being an IB student, one should ponder on the contemporary relavance of set texts and the meaning of justice.
